Having the appropriate kit can ensure that you have an enjoyable trip, wherever you may be heading. You don’t want to be up a mountain, hours from civilisation, when you realise that you didn’t bring enough warm layers, or that waterproof jacket you have is no longer waterproof!
I have been adding to and updating my “go-to-kit” gradually over the years; partly due to the cost; the need for better technical equipment; and simply because I have worn something so much that it is no longer wearable. Each mini shopping spree has quality and weight in mind.
When planning on carrying kit for a couple of days I will always focus on the total pack weight! I usually weigh each and every item going into my bag. From experience food and water can make up the bulk of the weight, so carefully planning what you really need is highly recommended. The other potentially heavy addition to your pack is your tent. If you have the pocket money available I can’t recommend highly enough to spend it on a decent tent. I am currently using a 3 man Marmot Bolt, which weighs only 1.6kg (including poles and pegs). This is such a game changer and means you can pack in that book you’ve been waiting to read for months instead.
A top tip when it comes to buying clothing, is to look for MERINO WOOL. This magic material is an active fibre which reacts to your body temperature so works amazingly in the hot or cold climates. Merino wool is soft, elastic, breathable and great for moisture control making it an ideal companion for days in the mountains. Plus you can get away with wearing it for a couple of days on the trot without needing to wash it! Winning!!
What usually sits in my attic waiting to be packed for a weekend away…
